Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Under WASH project, GMC was involved in WASH promotion. The organization was able to undertake the following: – 

  • In liaison with Haki Imani Organization is currently executing water access and climate smart initiative aimed at empowering communities in Garissa County on climate friendly water resources management. The initiative seeks to also link Garissa County communities with the relevant government departments on water resources and climate change for strengthened water access and management practices   
  • Construction of five-door market latrines and bathroom facilities in Soko Muqdi in Garissa Town in 2017. The latrines and bathroom facilities benefitted 12, 000 market population who included traders and buyers 
  • Hygiene promotion and education. These involved cleaning and refuse collection exercises carried out between 2015 and 2016 in Garissa Town; with specific target areas being high-waste deposit areas e.g. Soko Muqdi Market  
  • Creation and training of WASH management structures. GMC conducted a number of WASH capacity building for various WASH management structures including Soko Muqdi Toilet Committee  
  • Cholera prevention campaigns. Following the Garissa floods menace of 2018, GMC in liaison with the Kenya Red Cross facilitated the distribution of portable latrines in the floods displaced camps in Garissa and Tana River Counties    
  • Water treatment. Following the Garissa floods menace of 2018, GMC in liaison with the Kenya Red Cross facilitated the distribution of water purifiers for the floods displaced populations in Garissa and Tana River Counties
